Try taking amino acids in these 2 situations..

Should You Take Amino Acids?

August 11, 20232 min read

“The basic structure of proteins is quite simple: they are formed by hooking together in a chain discrete subunits called amino acids.” - Michael Behe

We all know amino acids are the building blocks of protein.

Does that mean you should take them in addition to your daily protein intake?

Maybe.

Most guys look for whatever supplements they can take to help them reach their goals faster

…and supplement companies know this, so they can peddle whatever you’ll open your wallet for cash.

For most of us, extra amino acid pills, liquids, and tablets are not necessary if you’re getting enough protein in your diet.

(Amino acids make up protein, remember?)

That said, there are 2 exceptions to the rule I like to follow:

[Situation A] If you’re doing a hardcore cut (diet) where you’re training a lot and have your calories dialed in so tight where you don’t want to risk the loss of hard-earned muscle.

For example, if you’re competing in a bodybuilding competition.

Training and calorie cutting can be grueling – especially the closer you get to the show date.

By taking extra aminos, you have little more insurance on preventing your body from wasting muscle tissue.

[Situation B] You’d like to take a specific amino acid (or combination of amino acids) for a specific purpose.

For example:

Arginine is great for boosting nitric oxide, blood flow and pumps in the gym (and the bedroom), which is why it’s in a bunch or pre-workout powders and natural sexual enhancers in one form or another.

Glutamine is great for muscle recovery from intense workouts, which is why it’s in many post workout supplements..

Theanine is great for relaxation and reducing stress and anxiety levels, which is why it’s sometimes found in natural sleep aids.

The list goes on and on.

Again, if you’re eating enough protein 1-2 grams per lb of bodyweight you probably don’t need them

…but if you’re training hard, low on calories, or you’d like to improve a specific area of your daily regimen, they may be worth a look.
